Introduction
While South Lake Tahoe is renowned for its world-class skiing, the winter season offers a plethora of activities for those who prefer to stay off the slopes. From breathtaking scenery to cozy cafes, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy a perfect winter day in this stunning alpine paradise. Here’s how to make the most of your time in South Lake Tahoe without strapping on skis or a board.
Morning: A Cozy Start
Begin your day with a leisurely breakfast at Heidi’s Pancake House in South Lake Tahoe (https://heidislaketahoe.com ) a local favorite known for its hearty portions, unlimited coffee, unique decor and it’s been open since 1964. Savor a warm meal while enjoying the charming mountain atmosphere. My favorite item on the menu is their breakfast skillet with a side of delicious pancakes, just too good. Grab a takeout beverage to keep you warm on your adventures. After breakfast, bundle up and take a stroll along the Lake Tahoe shoreline. If walking from Heidi’s head towards El Dorado beach. You will get a good view of the lake and if you fancy dipping your toes in the snow cold waters, there are many opportunities along the way. The crisp winter air and serene views of the snow-capped mountains will invigorate your spirit.
Mid-Morning: Explore the Great Outdoors
After your lakeside walk, if you have your own vehicle, head to Emerald Bay State Park for some breathtaking views. The iconic Emerald Bay is even more stunning in winter, with its frozen lake and snow-covered trees. Take a short hike on one of the park’s trails, or simply find a scenic spot to take photos and soak in the beauty of nature.
Tip: Emerald Bay road often closes during the winter, due to the weather. Check the status of the road first.
Lunch: Warm Up with Comfort Food
After your outdoor adventure, it’s time to warm up with a delicious lunch. Visit Base Camp Pizza Co. in Heavenly Village for some of the best pizza in town ( https://basecamppizzaco.com ) The cozy atmosphere and mouthwatering pies will hit the spot after a morning of exploration. If they have live music on, which they frequently do, it’s a great place to sit and people watch, whilst enjoying your favorite beverage. This is one of my children’s favorite place to eat- try their Thai Chicken Curry pizza, delicious. Tip: Base Camp gets extremely busy at lunch time, you may have your put your name on the waitlist. Enjoy a stroll around The Village, whilst you wait for the message.
Afternoon: Indoor Fun and Relaxation
Post-lunch, consider visiting one of South Lake Tahoes escape rooms, for some puzzling fun. Or, if you’re in the mood for relaxation, treat yourself to a spa afternoon at one of the local wellness centers. Enjoy a massage or a facial to rejuvenate your body and mind after a busy morning. The day spa in Harrahs, Reflection Spa, is a great choice.
Late Afternoon: Shopping and Strolling
Once you’re feeling refreshed, head to Heavenly Village for some shopping. Browse through the unique boutiques and souvenir shops, where you can find everything from winter gear to local art. Don’t forget to stop by a café for a warm drink and a sweet treat to enjoy while you shop. My favorite choice for a warming beverage is Heavens Little Cafe in the heart of Heavenly Village (https://www.heavenslittlecafe.net). Their hot chocolate with whipped cream, brings a smile to my face every time.
Evening: Dinner with a View
As the sun sets, make your way to one of the many great options in South Lake Tahoe. Some of my favorite evening dining options, for stunning views, cozy ambiance and fresh, locally sourced ingredients are: Riva Grill (https://www.rivagrill.com), Freshies (https://www.freshiesohana.com), Elements Tahoe (https://www.elementstahoe.com). Make sure to look west, the sunset over the lake is unforgettable.
Night: Stargazing and S’mores
After dinner, head back to your accommodation (see my recommendations) or find a nearby fire pit to enjoy some s’mores under the stars. The clear winter skies over Lake Tahoe provide a perfect backdrop for stargazing. Gather around the fire, share stories, and relish the warmth of the flames.
Conclusion
A perfect winter day in South Lake Tahoe doesn’t have to involve skiing. With a variety of activities to enjoy, from exploring the great outdoors to indulging in delicious food, you can create a memorable experience off the slopes. Embrace the beauty of winter in this alpine paradise and make the most of your time in South Lake Tahoe!
